From June 23 to July 9, 2023, the new edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi returns, an international event of art, music, culture, and entertainment that has been held in Spoleto since 1958.
A Festival to promote sustainability and ESG issues
Over the past two years, the Festival dei Due Mondi has been committed to promoting sustainability and becoming a point of reference for ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) issues, as underlined by the sustainability goals of the UN 2030 Agenda. As part of the five-year agreement with the Municipality of Spoleto, an interactive workshop on sustainability was organized, producing a strategic document with concrete recommendations for making cities and human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. This report fueled dialogue with local associations to define shared programmatic and operational guidelines. Additionally, discussions were held on sustainability in the agricultural sector and a conference was held on the sustainable future of the historic centers of medium-sized Italian cities.

Protagonists of the Italian and international scene, between science and entertainment
The Festival dei Due Mondi also presents a series of projects related to sustainability and ESG in collaboration with RAI. The “Plant Revolution” project will host a meeting with scientist Stefano Mancuso, who has dedicated his academic life to demonstrating the intelligence of the botanical world. Indeed, Mancuso argues that plants offer essential technological solutions for our future.
The “Feminist Choreographies” project involves some of the greatest protagonists of the Italian and international scene, including dancers, choreographers, directors, and writers, to rewrite the history of dance and promote gender equality. This event is an important step on the path towards greater inclusion and representation in the art of dance.
Art and culture for social change
Culture and art can break down barriers and foster social change. The “Culture Breaks the Bars” project brings together actors and inmates to present the catalog of the exhibition “Je est un autre” and discuss the theater activities carried out in prisons, demonstrating how theater can be a tool for social reintegration and positive change in the lives of young people. Concurrently, the “Utopias and Dystopias” project returns, offering round tables and seminars on training and education in prisons and literacy at university. Furthermore, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, and theater mediation sessions are planned to actively engage the public and offer unique experiences.

The commitment to sustainability also extends to youth education.
Thanks to the collaboration with Spoleto schools, training courses, tailoring workshops, theater mediation, and information points on environmental and social sustainability have been organized through a wide range of initiatives. This way, young people can experience the Festival’s organizational and artistic work firsthand, learning and contributing firsthand.
Behind the Scenes of the Festival of Two Worlds
For those who wish to explore the historical and artistic side of the Festival, guided “Behind the Scenes” tours are available, revealing the moments leading up to a performance and the details of the theatrical productions. Furthermore, guided tours of the Menotti trail offer an immersion in the history of the Festival dei Due Mondi and its founder, Gian Carlo Menotti. The Festival also engages the public in projects to discover the Spoleto area. The “Secret and Underground Spoleto” events, in collaboration with the Amici di Spoleto Onlus Association, allow visitors to discover hidden treasures and hear untold stories about the city.
