The Deposition from the Cross

2 March 202315 October 2025 admin Perugino Città della Pieve, Perugino
Fragments of the fresco 'Deposition from the Cross' by Perugino. In the centre of the image, a man at the foot of the cross holds two ladders resting on the arms of the cross. The unconscious body of the Madonna lies on the ground on the left side of the fresco. The figure is surrounded by a group of women (some kneeling beside her, others standing) who observe the scene with sweet faces marked by grief. At the right bottom of the artwork, some Apostles witness the event.

Virgin Mary in Glory and Saints

23 September 202215 October 2025 admin Perugino Città della Pieve
Painting depicting a Madonna and Child seated in heaven within an almond-shaped frame, with all around small angels and two larger angels at the sides. Standing and lined up on the ground are four saints: from left to right, St. Protasius, St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Gervasius. Protasius and Gervasius each hold the pole of a banner with a castle, the symbol of Città della Pieve. St. Peter holds a large key; St. Paul a sword and a book. On the ground is a geometric floor, behind the saints is a parapet in the central part of which an inscription can be seen. In the background is a very vague and blurred hilly landscape. The Rocca dei Perugini Nowadays The powerful Rocca dei Perugini, “Fortress of Perugian (soldiers),” was built along the town walls near Porta Perugina, the town gate toward Perugia, in fact. This is whence, already in 1296, the road called Via Pievaiola started, that still nowadays connects Città della Pieve and Perugia.

Vista grandangolare di una stanza di palazzo della Corgna. Sopra le luminose finestre sulla parete di destra, si erge un soffitto maestosamente affrescato con varie scene e numerosissime grottesche.

Right in front of the Cathedral, one of the most beautiful lordly mansions in Città della Pieve rises, the Della Corgna Palace. A study on this building cannot make without the personality of its first owner, Ascanio Della Corgna, and the time period he lived in.

A Museum inside a Church

It is quite unusual to find a church used as a museum. This is however the case with the Museo Civico-Diocesano, the Communal/Church Museum existing inside the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi (“Saint Mary of the Servants,” with reference to the religious Order of the Servants of Mary) in Città della Pieve.
