ROMAN ASSISI

2 more photos
Duration:
1 day - From 30 to 30 MAY
You are going to:
ASSISI, ITALIA
Trip information

Often the eye stops at appearance; when walking the streets looking at buildings, churches and alleys, it seems that everything is there, standing still in time, without taking into account the countless metamorphoses of cities. Roman Assisi tour wants to change point of view and go beyond what we usually see in this beautiful umbrian city, discovering what Asisium, an important Roman municipality, must have looked like back in its time. In a journey through open-air alleys and underground areas we will try to investigate the ancient history of the city, thanks to the many archaeological discoveries made in the last century!

The meeting and starting place for the tour is in Matteotti Square, at the parking lot.

Step 1: Roman Amphitheater and Temple of Minerva
Where did the ancient Romans who lived in Assisi used to entertain themselves? Well camouflaged among the medieval dwellings stands the Roman amphitheater; thanks to the guide, we discover the original structure and get a sense of what it was like in ancient times, over time incorporated inside the houses. Moving on we come across the famous Temple of Minerva, an imposing pagan structure later converted to a church, an absolute jewel of the city not to be missed.

Step 2: Roman Forum
During the visit we enter with the guide the archaeological area underneath Piazza del Comune, here we get to discover how the square and daily life in Roman Assisi was organized; the podium, walls, stretches of road and large blocks of travertine, all of which tell a thousand-year history made up of men who shaped the city. Still in the archaeological area we can observe the remains of Roman artisan stores overlooking the forum, and, being well preserved, it is easy to imagine what they must have looked like in ancient times!

Step 3: Larario's Domus and Properzio's Domus
Among the city's most striking archaeological discoveries are surely these two Roman Domus, impressive for their quality and state of preservation. The walls of these houses, perfectly intact for a few meters, have remained almost completely unaltered; the magnificent wall decorations are still clearly visible today, and the floor mosaics make it possible to imagine what the splendor of these ancient dwellings must have been
