Trip information

Perugia Underground - Chapter Museum - San Francesco al Prato

Move along Perugia's ancient Decumanus route, which crosses the city from east to west, to dive into the city's history and traditions.

This cumulative ticket allows you to explore three very different places, but all significant to the city and its history.

With the guided tour of the Perugia Underground you can discover the roots of the city, the birth and evolution of its acropolis from the Etruscans, through the Romans and the Middle Ages, through a journey of more than 25 centuries. The tour, lasting about 45 minutes, winds its way down to 15 meters below the current level of the Cathedral for an immersive journey through time and space.

At the Chapter Museum you can admire works by artists such as Perugino, Signorelli, Agostino di Duccio and many others who marked the cultural life and represented the popular devotion of the Perugian people. Totally refurbished in 2023, the museum consists of eight thematic rooms told by the room panels in each.

One of the museum's works, Perugino's Martinelli Altarpiece, was originally located in the church of San Francesco al Prato along with another work by the same painter and two works by Raphael. The latter 3 works are currently in various collections in Rome.
Of this imposing and fascinating now-deconsecrated church, once richly frescoed and chosen as Perugia's pantheon by local noble families, remains the remains that tell of a long and troubled history of collapse, reconstruction, consolidation, further collapse and restoration.
After twenty years of work, the church became usable again as an auditorium in 2021, while we had to wait until June 2024 to see this space reopened to the city and its visitors.
